KUNSTHALLE VIENNA 2001 — The richly decorated historic riding hall is complemented by the sparse practicality of the Kunsthalle building. From the outside, the large art gallery is a horizontal block. Structurally autonomous, it snuggles up to the side of the riding hall, its roof overlapping the eaves of its neighbour. Exposed brick masonry covers the façade, the roof, and the cantilevered panels projecting the front faces. In the historic riding arena, a grandstand extends across the entire depth of the building, separating the shared foyer from the large events hall.
