ZOOGESELLSCHAFTSHAUS CHILDREN’S & YOUTH THEATRE FRANKFURT // 1. Prize - 08.07.2021

O&O Baukunst has won the competition for the children’s and youth theatre in Frankfurt’s Zoogesellschaftshaus. The reorientation merged the zoo society, the children’s and youth theatre, and the zoo school while also providing an opportunity to polish the historic building to a shine with a fresh spatial organisation and architectural additions.

The jury selected O&O Baukunst’s design as the winner out of 17 submissions: The external appearance of the south side of the existing building will be sensitively adapted to blend with the historic façade of the old building. The result is a seemingly massive, U-shaped structure, complemented by a light hybrid timber building with a filigree steel and glass construction towards the zoo. This creates an atmospherically pleasant and playful filtering layer for the zoo, lightly contrasting the solidity of the historic building while also making a wonderful transition to the outdoor area. (...) The design achieves the desired goals of creating an open house, maintaining flexibility, and having a pleasant and child-friendly atmosphere.

All competition entries will be exhibited in the Frankfurt Zoogesellschaftshaus from July 9 to July 25, 2021.
