URBANE MITTE GLEISDREIECK BERLIN — O&O Baukunst won the urban planning competition Urban Mitte am Gleisdreieck Berlin.
The park area is located in the direct vicinity of the Potsdamer Platz center, bordering on elevated subway tracks whose arcade sections with the associated train station embody a striking piece of early industrial building culture. This is where the new urban center at Gleisdreieck will be built.
Seven trapezoidal building bodies with a height between 25 and 90 meters will form a new type of urban ground plan, which will be able to create airiness and density at the same time with complex relationships and connect the city and the park landscape at the Gleisdreieck. Forming a group, a play of perspectives and scales of shifting perceptions of far and near emerges between the solitaires.
The southern construction field is the first step in this proceeding realisation: An integrated sports hall connects the two bodies of construction fields 6 and 7. With its outdoor facilities it offers spaces for play and movement. The first floors are shop windows to the city and will house, for example, a canteen and a bicycle workshop. Offices and rooms for new working environments will be created on the upper floors.
