YOUTH & CHILDREN’S THEATRE FRANKFURT // Refurbishment of the Zoogesellschaftshaus - 16.05.2025
An important milestone has been reached – the city council has approved the renovation of the listed Zoogesellschaftshaus at the Frankfurt Zoo, including the expansion of the Zooschule and the establishment of a youth and children’s theatre.
The Zoogesellschaftshaus is an impressive example of nineteenth-century architecture. After being almost completely destroyed in 1944, the building was rebuilt after the war and went on to lose its shape over the course of the years due to multiple remodels and expansions. The building is now in dire need of renovation.
In 2021, O&O Baukunst won the competition to build the Frankfurt Youth and Children’s Theatre. The conversion of the Zoogesellschaftshaus into a new cultural and learning centre demonstrates an exemplary approach to existing buildings as a collage of old and new. The 1950s installations, including the curved foyer staircases and balconies, will be preserved. The listed Wilhelminian façade is being restored. The loggias and balconies of the newly added composite timber east wing open towards the terracing of the zoo.
