HOUSE OF AUSTRIAN HISTORY MQ Vienna // 1st Prize - 12.09.2024
In the international competition for the realisation of the House of Austrian History (hdgö) in the MuseumsQuartier Wien, O&O Baukunst Berlin’s design was awarded 1st place.
The hdgö makes the history of Austria from the nineteenth century to the present-day tangible. This new addition to the MuseumsQuartier Vienna marks the first time the arts and culture area has expanded since opening in 2001. For the new location, the winning project envisages a sustainable structure made of wood that clearly differentiates from the existing building. The harmony between the old and the new in the MuseumsQuartier takes place quite naturally.
The gutting of the old building creates large, interconnected exhibition areas. The new building fits with ease into the open monastery courtyard, which has a planting concept focusing on the importance of sustainable practices. A permeable layer envelops the interior, creating a blurriness that makes both openness and intimacy possible at once. This allows visitors to immerse themselves in the House of Austrian History with an open mind.
