Older, Newer, and More Speculative Typologies
Tuesday, 10 May 2022 at 7 p.m
at O&O Depot
Andreas Lechner, associate professor at the Faculty of Architecture of TU Graz, speaks with Markus Penell of O&O Baukunst and Jonas Trakt of FAKT about his book Thinking Design: Blueprint for an Architecture of Typology, a programmatic collection of ideas on the further development of cities.
Building design is always based on an awareness of typologies, which Lechner summarises in three thematic sections: Tectonics, Type, and Topos, all highlighted from various perspectives. In each of the three chapters, four of a total of 12 typologies are examined in detail: theatres, museums, libraries, government, offices, recreation, religion, retail, factory, education, surveillance, and hospital. A total of 144 carefully selected examples from a wide range of classic designs and buildings are used to explain the basics of our collective architectural knowledge, which can be used to draw new connecting lines in the transformative processes of design work.
Andreas Lechner operates his own architecture firm and is a member of the Graz Old Town Expert Commission.
